Benedita Sampaio Nunes

Benedita has rich experience both as counsel and as tribunal secretary in international arbitration proceedings. She has been involved in a wide range of civil and commercial litigation and arbitration cases, both Portuguese and international, in diverse industries such as energy, construction, pharmaceutical, insurance and fashion. Having grown up in Portuguese, English and French, she has also developed Cross Legal, which provides legal translation and interpretation services, supporting companies in developing business relationships across borders, as well as courts – notably the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) – in their judicial activity and dissemination of case law.

Benedita was born and raised in Brussels, where she started her law studies at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Subsequently, she moved to Lisbon, where she earned her law degree from the Faculty of Law of Universidade Católica Portuguesa in 2011. During these studies, she was awarded a merit scholarship and academic honours for top performances. Her penchant for litigation and procedural matters led her to pick arbitration as an optional subject. She pursued this interest in her LLM at the London School of Economics and Political Science by enrolling in Jan’s international commercial arbitration class, in addition to intellectual property, cyberlaw and corporate finance classes. After graduating from her LLM with Distinction, Benedita trained and then worked as a member of the litigation and arbitration team at Morais Leitão, a top tier Portuguese law firm, and was admitted to the Portuguese Bar. She was also a member of the French desk, providing Francophone clients with tailored advice, and a founding member of Team Genesis, a special team of lawyers dedicated to advising in everything related to start-ups throughout their end-to-end life cycle.

In 2016, eager to develop and to broaden her professional activities, Benedita started working as an independent advisor. Among other activities, she has co-founded a legal translation and interpretation project, Cross Legal, which has recently won a bid for services to the Court of Justice of the European Union. Furthermore, she advises clients in multi-cultural legal settings, especially international business transactions and arbitration cases. She started working with Jan as tribunal secretary in 2019 and has gained more experience as a tribunal secretary also with leading Portuguese arbitrators.
